Patty has always been a believer in public education. She and her husband Shawn were both educated in public schools and believe it can provide the solid foundation for raising a well-rounded healthy child. Her long-standing enthusiasm for serving her community has extended across many facets of her life.
Patty’s passion for serving the community began while attending ASU where she volunteered at “The Free Store,” literally a free store serving the needs of Arizona’s homeless population. For multiple years going forward, she co-chaired the Women’s Health & Wealth Symposium with Scottsdale Healthcare, financially advised The Verde Valley Guidance Clinic and Phoenix Shanti Group, as well as taught non-credit investment/finance classes for “Women in Transition” at Scottsdale Community College. She is a proud supporter of many charitable causes.
Patty’s twin daughters, Ashlyn and Avery (13) began their education in Scottsdale Unified School District at Kiva Elementary School in kindergarten. The entire Beckman Family immersed themselves in the well- respected and giving Kiva Community. While Patty worked full-time as a finance professional, she supported the school though helping with the PTO, acting as Homeroom Parent, leading Masterpiece Art, joining and donating to the auction committee, and volunteering to help with efforts to pass the Override with, “Yes to Children”.
It was during these early years that Patty decided she wanted to do more. She looked to the elementary school that her mother attended, Hohokam. In 2010 Patty began working closely with Hohokam’s community outreach specialist to support the students in southern Scottsdale. She has developed a very strong relationship with Hohokam and annually adopts families at Christmas, orchestrates shoe and winter coat drives, donates school supplies, fills the “nurse wish list”, and has facilitated scholarships for students thru Desert Stages Theatre Camps, where Patty also proudly serves on the Board of Directors.
Currently, Patty’s daughters attend Mohave Middle School where, again, Patty has shown her commitment to our schools by serving as PTO Co-President. Serving as PTO Co-President has been an incredibly rewarding experience for Patty. Communicating frequently and directly with teachers, administration, and students, Patty has enjoyed seeing the PTO flourish. Some of the successes have been growing the silent auction proceeds by 30%, establishing a scholarship recognition banquet for academics at year end, bridging the elementary schools with Mohave- by inviting the Kiva students to perform at the Talent Show, and finally personally subsidizing (with her Co-President) the hiring of a grant writer to seek out and apply for grants that may be a good fit for Mohave. Success with the grant writer is being achieved currently!
Patty is a candidate that will not just join committees, she believes in getting out in the community and helping wherever she can. She has a proven history of it.
